I have witnessed candidates that ran and lost, but were inspired to keep active just because they did get a lot of votes they weren't supposed to get. As long as the independent or third party appears to have support and / or growing it inspires others to stay in the fight, but there is a bigger issue:

When George Wallace won the race for president many didn't expect it. No, I realize that he didn't get elected, but Wallace put issues on the table that neither side wanted to address. By putting Trump on the spot AND having a third party candidate in the mix, Trump will have to take a stand. And if you don't like the real Trump and feel he is greater of the two evils at that point, you won't vote for him. If he's as bad as can be proven, what, exactly, are we losing?

PRIOR to Trump, presidents were cautious about tossing out Executive Orders to make new laws against firearms. Trump not only initiated the bump stock ban, but he told the liberal Democrats that he would institute gun control AND whip his base into line.
